Beginning Calligraphy
About the Class
There are many people who own calligraphy pens, but aren’t sure what to do with them. There are others who have always marveled at pen flourishing and embellishment but who don’t know where to begin to learn the skill themselves. This introductory course is a good starting point for both these types of people and anyone else with calligraphic curiosity. In the initial six-week class students will learn the fundamentals of the Italic style. They will focus on building familiarity with the tools of calligraphy, building confidence with letter forms, and learning how these basic forms and proportions can be used to build other calligraphic styles.
Employing a method of teaching that assesses students’ natural handwriting propensities, they will see how these tendencies canbe turned to an advantage as they approach the calligraphic art form. This technique often speeds the learning process and can help ease anxieties that often become obstacles to successful lettering.
The course will also cover layout and materials, and give an overview of the historical development of letter forms. By the end of the class students will have a collection of materials with which to continue their practice, a completed piece of calligraphy suitable for display, and an expanded interest and confidence in lettering arts.
Class pace will be influenced by the aims and skills of the class members and is usually a fun and relaxed experience for both student and instructor.
About the Teacher
At the age of 10, Emily Canter’s father took her to see The Book of Kells, and she immediately discovered within herself a powerful admiration for the forms of letters. The experience began an overwhelming desire to buy fountain pens and copy manuscript styles, unaware that there was a thing called “calligraphy” at all. The interest continues to this day.
An English major from the University of Texas, Canter has used her education to combine the written word with the illustrated image and made a career of that combination doing illustration, copy writing, art direction and web development for companies like IBM, Sony, Duracell, and the company she and husband Geoff own, Digital Tigers.
Ms. Canter also enjoys a symbiotic interest in the study of history that leads to interesting connections between lands, languages, and alphabets – how these travelled across the globe and reflected the styles and stories of their civilizations, and how they come to have symbolic meaning for contemporary minds.
